A fantastic start to a new action-packed trilogy!

When Ben Warner is being bullied at his new school and a cafeteria table suddenly snaps shut by itself, Ben is plunged into the secret world of actuation, a little known science that combines physics and imagination to perform unbelievable feats. It's always been Ben and his mother against the world, plus it's difficult to make friends when you move around so much. He and his mom are a team; his mom needs him - who else would remind her of the small details that slip her mind, like taking her pills? When Dr. Hughes enters his life, introducing him to actuation, and he finds that he has a natural talent for it, Ben feels that he's finally found something of his own. Things turn deadly, however, when an experimental technology Dr. Hughes has been working on is stolen and the doctor herself is taken captive by a group that hopes to use actuation to achieve their nefarious goals.
Ben and his friend Peter are taken in by another group, The Quantum League, a group that also studies actuation but for good... supposedly. The Quantum League might claim they're the good guys, but Ben feels suspiciously like a captive. He panics when he learns that he's been erased from his mother's memory "for the greater good." The League promises that they'll reverse the process, giving his mother's memories back, if Ben cooperates and helps them retrieve Dr. Hughes' technology. Ben doesn't know who to trust, but he'll do anything to get his mother and his life back.
This first installment of Kirby's new Quantum League trilogy, THE SPELL ROBBERS, was a solid beginning. From the start, there's plenty of action and intrigue, hooking readers from the first pages. I loved the descriptions of the League's headquarters, full of agents practicing actuation and plotting missions. It had an superhero/comic book vibe that jumped off the page.
Ben's character was refreshing. He's a natural when it comes to actuation and he's drawn to the power and possibilities, but, at the same time, he loves his mom and can't bear to leave her behind. Few of the other characters bat an eye at having to leave their families behind to become an agent, so Ben's refusal and his vow to do whatever it takes to get his life back really stands out.
I'll definitely be reading the next Quantum League books - this one ended in a really interesting place and with many unanswered questions!

Can't wait for #2!

This was a really fun book! The characters were developed and likable, the pacing was perfect, the plot was engaging, the whole thing was just exciting and fun to read. I don't read a lot of youth fiction, but my 8 year old wanted to read this, so I did too. It was perfect for him! If you're looking for a quality youth fiction read, this one delivers. I would recommend this book to anyone!

A Sure-Fire Hit For Boys and Girls Who Like Heroic Adventure

The Quantum League: Spell Robbers is my first experience with Edgar Award-winning author Matthew J. Kirby, and I was not disappointed. While the plot is not super unique at first glance, Kirby executes wonderfully. Readers' imaginations will be sparked as they watch Ben learn how to "actuate," or use his thoughts to create things like rain clouds and fireballs. And as Kirby tells the tale, he creates a nice comfortable routine for Ben before bringing a sudden surprise that will bring you to the edge of your seat, and he'll keep your attention until the conclusion.
There are a couple of things I particularly enjoyed about the book. First, Ben's character and several others' are surprisingly well-drawn for a middle-grade action story. In this type of book, it's common to let the plot do all the talking, but here the larger storyline is shaped by character development. The emotional impact lends more interest. Secondly, there is moral ambiguity. This is not your stock good guys vs. bad guys story. Ben wrestles with deciding whom to trust and it seems no one comes out entirely clean. Finally, Ben is motivated by his love for his mother and his desire to reunite with her, despite the "detachment" that the so-called good guys perform to wipe him from her memory. There is sadness and complexity in Ben's story (and in the stories of others). And these somber notes inspire the reader to root for him; it's not just bravery but heart that makes Ben heroic. Beyond caring about his mother, he's also a compassionate friend.
Though the conclusion sets up the next installment, you won't feel like you're dangling from a cliff when you finish. But you will be excited about continuing the story to find out what happens next! I know I am!

With a quick-moving plot, and action and intrigue enough to keep even reluctant readers turning the pages, The Quantum League: Spell Robbers is a sure-fire hit for boys and girls who like heroic adventure. Part superheroes, part spy book, part sci-fi/fantasy, give this to kids who like Artemis Fowl or Spy School.
