A quality anti-sicilian repertoire

Every Quality Chess book is a quality book, and Kotronias's "Beating the Anti-Sicilians" is no exception: well thought out, deeply analysed, with considerable positional commentary. The repertoire is essentially an update and detailed extension of Rogozenko's "Anti-Sicilians, a guide for Black" from 2003. [NOTE TO EDITORS: Rogozenko's work is not listed in the bibliography. When you do a reprint can you please correct this omission.] I will summarise Rogozenko's repertoire below - which I have mainly followed over the last 15 years - and then identify the changes Kotronias has made. Forgive me if I approach this from the perspective of a ...d6 player, but ...Nc6/...e6 players are amply served as well.

Rogozenko's repertoire:
GPA: 3...g6 and later ...e6. Kotronias covers 5 Bc4 e6 6 f5!? and 5 Bb5 Nd4. Curiously he overlooks 5 Bc4 e6 6 0-0 which I have found more common in my games.
Closed: meet 6 f4 e6 and 6 Be3 e5. I can verify that playing two different systems actually works
2 c3 Sicilian: 2...Nf6 with ...e6 systems. These systems are very sound as long as Black doesn't expose himself to a king side attack.
2 b3 is met with ...e5; the treatment of 2 g3 and 2 d3 is a bit more precise than Rogozenko; and as well as the Wing gambit, the deferred Wing Gambit is covered, which Rogozenko overlooked.

Differences
- The big difference is 3 Bb5, which is met with the "Universal" ...d6/...Nc6 (or ...Nc6/...d6). Kotronias admits that the Moscow with 3...Bd7 is completely sound for Black but thinks there are more winning chances in the "Universal" system. I suspect he is right - most of Blacks tries in 3...Bd7 seem to be to obtain equality.
- He covers the Tiviakov Rossolimo, which didn't exist when Rogozenko wrote. Here he favours systems with Palliser's ...a6, rather than the more popular ...e6. I have played ...a6 myself and think it leads to sound positions, and avoides a trap in the ...e6 systems.
- Against 2 f4 he recommends 2...g6 to transpose to a normal GPA. I have gone through his analysis of 3 d4 with the engines running and they don't seem quite has optimistic as he is. There may be a problem with the repertoire here.
- Against the Morra Gambit he recommends systems with ...g6.(I normally "pass" with ...Nf6)
- Against the 4 Qxd4 he covers ...Nc6 under the universal system (Rogozenko gave 4...a6)

I have used Rogozenko's book as my guide for 15 years, with only minor extensions. I am a fan of the repertoire; its served me well.
I do have one criticism of Kotronias's book, the analysis doesn't always appear 100% accurate/comprehensive. I have given a couple of examples above, and there are others. Nonetheless, I have no doubt that Kotronias's update and extension of Rogozenko's repertoire will provide me with ample material to work with for another 15 years. Consequently I have no difficulty giving it a 5 star rating.

World of Beauty

Songwriter/singer/poet/novelist Leonard Cohen is a writer who, through the use of a few words alone, can send a thousand different emotions and images through your head. His writing is powerful and touching, though often too poetic. Beautiful Losers is, in fact, a poem disguised as a novel. It is a postmodernistic work of Canadian fiction that, although beautiful, refuses to make sense.
The story's nameless narrator is scarred by the death of his wife, Edith, and of his best friend, F. As the three were part of a very strange romantic triangle, the posthumous revelations the narrator comes to during the course of the story are highly revealing and often shocking. As he mourns his wife, he cannot hide the fact that he was also in love with F. and his strange view on life.
A historian in disguise, the narrator is also doing research on an Native saint named Catherine, who's story is an echo of the things the narrator has went through and is going through. As these four chracters entertwine, and as more and more painful secrets are revealed, we are forced into a chaotic world where sense does not exist, where order and sanity are always at stake.
A highly poetic effort, Beautiful Losers ins't a book that should be read quickly. Just like the prose, the reader should take his time while reading it. It's too easy to miss the great irony and humour behind all the darkness and sadness of the prose. Cohen created a world where surrealism, sexuality and violence are part of the ordinary, where order seems to fail with a shocking consistancy and where disorder seems to rule.

Cohen the Novelist

Having avoided Leonard Cohen for so long, lumping him with the "classic rock" I found annoying, I'm now in the midst of a serious Leonard Cohen Obsession by way of a Jeff Buckley cover and then this massively brilliant, inspired and dense, genuis, pornographic, and simply awesome novel. The language in this book is so alive, you would think it would grow flesh on the page. Any passage rivals Henry Miller, James Joyce, Gabriel Garcia Marquez. If you're looking for a plot-driven page turner, go elsewhere. This is the stuff of serious linguistic revelry, for people who like to read books that make you jealous that he wrote it, and you didn't.

Like: Days without work. Why did that list depress me? I should never have made the list. I've done something bad to your belly, Edith. I tried to use it. I tried to use your belly against the Plague. I tried to be a man in a padded locker room telling a beautiful smutty story to eternity. I tried to be an emcee in a tuxedo arousing a lodge of honeymooners, my bed full of golf windows. I forgot that I was desperate. I forgot that I began this research in desperation. My briefcase fooled me. My tidy notes led me astray. I thought I was doing a job.

Or: Oh God, Your Morning Is Perfect. People Are Alive In Your World. I Can Hear The Little Children In The Elevator. The Airplane Is Flying Through The Original Blue. Mouths Are Eating Breakfast. The Radio Is Filled With Electricity. The Trees Are Excellent.

[It goes on for two pages like this, beautiful, perfect.]

So, I would have to say that I give this an effusive six out of five stars.

And, I should add, Leonard Cohen is NOT dead! He is a Zen monk. Where are the novels that he was supposed to write for us? He was cheated out of his retirement fund by an ex-wife/manager. You should buy this book so he can retire comfortably, as he should, one of the great genuises of the English language that has been overshadowed by the filthy stupidity of the rock industry of America.

A Gateway to Dreams and Nightmares....

I have seen images in this book I will never, ever forget. This book takes you places you never knew a mind could take you. Some words of Warning, If you are looking for the style Cohen uses while writing his songs, you will not find it here in this book. What you will find is the nightmarish journey of one woman into sainthood, and three people pushing sanity to it's limit. I have to say this is one of the best novels I have ever read. You have to give it at least 50 pages before you start figuring out what's going on. But once the book takes off there's no going back your in for a ride.

Update - Diet and exercise recommendations outdated, technical explanations easy to understand

The technical explanations of heart disease were good and easy to understand. However, the specific diet and exercise recommendations were outdated. Such as eating margarine instead of butter, poopooing coconut oil, little or no red meat or eggs, eating nuts sparingly and eating whole grains. Grass fed, grass finished beef is high in Omega 3s and eggs eaten raw or where the yolks are runny provide a lot of nutrition.
I based my opinion on the findings of 2 doctors ... Dr. Mercola and Dr. Al Sears. The diet recommended by Dr. Mercola is closest to the Paleo diet and as follows:
* A large-scale, 30-year long study found that people who regularly ate one ounce of nuts at least seven times per week were 20 percent less likely to die for any reason, compared to those who avoided nuts in their diet
* Eating nuts at least five times a week corresponded to a 29 percent reduction in mortality risk due to heart disease; a 24 percent reduction for respiratory disease; and an 11 percent reduction for cancer
* In order for your body to adapt to burning fat instead of sugar, replace non-vegetable carbohydrates in your diet with high-quality healthful fats. Raw nuts are one source of such fats

Dr. Mercola recommends focusing on eating whole, unprocessed foods while avoiding grains and sugars which are precursors to disease. Consume a diet primarily high in healthy fats like coconuts, avocados, olive oil, butter and raw nuts like almonds(ideally between 50-75 percent in your diet) and raw, organic vegetables. Next, consume good protein, such as grass-fed, organic meats and organic pasteurized eggs. His current recommendation is one gram of protein for every kilogram of lean body mass, increasing it by 25% if you are pregnant or training for athletic events. This translates to about 49-70 grams of protein a day for most people. Eat Fruits moderately because they contain fructose, which should be kept below 25 grams a day, including 15 grams from whole fruit. Reduce or eliminate grains from your diet to help lower your insulin and for you to achieve optimal health and well-being.

The title could be "Everything Your Cardiologist Didn't Explain & Advise", I read it, I did it and I'm winning.

Even if discovering Dr. Crandall's book at just the right moment hadn't rescued me from the depression and bewilderment of my stent event and given me a shining hope and promising path forward, I'd still say read his book! But it did, so I can endorse the advice given wholeheartedly. I'm living his advice right now 9 months after finding myself in the emergency room; 40 lbs lighter, healthier and happier than I've been or felt in way over a decade. His plan is simple and straightforward, lifestyle choices affect our life and he explains how. This particularly helped me, understanding how it all works for and against us, then in unvarnished terms he explains what to do about it. And if you do it and I did you're on your way all the way back from heart attack, heart disease and it's been wonderful. Living Dr. Crandall's advice and seeing the results has been such an uplifting experience it inspired my better half to create a blog about our journey called "Fix It Plan" (found via google by adding dot com). For me this was not only a life saver but I've got to say again ... a life improver, I'm back and better.

I found this book to provide the most relevant information in a way that is easy for anyone to understand. This is a good book for anyone to read whether or not you currently have any heart or cholesteral health issues ----- especially since many people do not even realize that they are developing problems until a serious event happens. Glad I purchased ---- plan to purchase additional copies for my brother and a friend who can benefit from this information.

About the Author
CHARLES HODGE (1797–1878) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was educated at Princeton College and Princeton Seminary. He married Sarah Bache, great granddaughter of Benjamin Franklin in 1822. He was a professor at Princeton Theological Seminary most of his life. He founded the “Biblical Repertory and Princeton Review.” He is known for his Calvinistic teachings published in his well-known “Systematic Theology.”

A kinder, gentler Charle Hodge

Here is Hodge writing for adult Sunday School students on the basics of Christian life. Strong emphasis on our need for a Savior, and the gift of justification. Note: this edition is hard to read, because it's a photocopy of the original British version. It is missing a couple of pages. I recommend that you spend more to get the Paulist edition which has a fine introduction by Mark Noll.

For the first time since she moved from mass market originals to hardcover (with 1996's Harvest), Gerritsen offers a sequel to last year's bestselling The Surgeon. It's a smart move, as in that novel this popular author introduced a terrific lead character, Jane Rizzoli, a female Boston homicide detective who rivals Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta for intensity and complexity. Her nemesis, serial killer Warren Hoyt, aka the Surgeon, whom Rizzoli sent to prison, returns here, too; that's not so terrific, as he's basically a Hannibal Lecter clone, though Gerritsen does pair him up this time with a second serial killer, known among cops as the Dominator. The discovery of the corpse of one of the Dominator's victims in a ritzy Boston suburb gets the action moving. Rizzoli notes connections between the Dominator's handiwork and that of Hoyt, and visits Hoyt behind bars. Eventually it's revealed that Hoyt and the Dominator have contacted one another by mail. Hoyt escapes and links up with the Dominator, and it's no surprise that Rizzoli is their number one target. The novel is suspenseful and stuffed with an encyclopedia's worth of tightly detailed forensic lore. Rizzoli gets a new love interest (Hoyt killed her last one, in The Surgeon), an FBI agent, which is handled with realism and subtlety, but her fuming at man's inhumanity to woman may grate on male readers. There are first-person italicized passages from Hoyt's point of view, a genre cliche, and at times the grisliness of the murders tends toward sensationalism. This strong thriller should sell very well, but it's not Gerritsen's best.

'The Apprentice', by Tess Gerritsen, is the second of the Rizzoli and Isles series. When Rizzoli finally puts Warren Hoyt, otherwise known as The Surgeon, in prison for life, she thought that she was through with him. Just like 'The Surgeon', which was first of this series, 'The Apprentice' is a real page turner.

Detective Rizzoli gets called into a string of murders because the MO is the same as her old nemesis, Warren Hoyt. Hoyt, the man of her nightmares.
Hoyt. The man who pinned her to the floor with a scapel in both of her hands. Hoyt. The devil incarnate.

Even from his prison cell, it seems as though he was still killing. A copycat? Doubtful. Jane Rizzoli believed that Hoyt had somehow engineered these murders. Every detail was there, from the teacup on the husband's knee to the folded nightgown in the bedroom. It was Hoyt all over. Jane gets the courage up to face Hoyt in prison. She is looking for some answers to questions that would help her solve these murders. Hoyt, who is obsessed with Jane, was pleased that she had come to him, but was no help, of course. Maura Isles, the Medical Examiner, helps to keep her best friend, Jane, on an even keel, working tirelessly to find this maniacal killer. Every murder that Jane worked in the case, brings more memories of Hoyt to her mind.

We see the world through Rizzoli's eyes and feel the hate that she has for the one man that she cannot get out of her life, Hoyt. Ms. Gerritsen has done it again. I thoroughly enjoyed 'The Apprentice' and gave it 5 stars. I am looking forward to more of Rizzoli and Isles books.

I did not like Jane Rizzoli at first, in the first book The Surgeon. But the character intrigued me enough to read this second book and at least now I understand the character better. These two books have been a wild ride, and I look forward to the next book in the series.

This is not a TV Rizzoli. The book is much darker, and violent. Enjoyed the mystery very much. Makes me want to read more of Gerritson's work.

Adorable!

Love the pictures, they're adorable and allow you to play with all types of fun colors. Also, there's a "tester" page with a grid which is great because you can test out colors & see how they appear on the paper. I knocked off 1 star because I wish the paper was smoother, it's a bit on the rough side, which doesn't feel as good when you're coloring & it makes marker & pencil lines obvious & hard to blend. The Prismacolor blending pencil helps with this. But overall, I love the book!

This coloring book reminds me of my kidos delight with "My Little Ponies" and "Rainbow Brite." Children and anyone who like anime style drawings will like this coloring book. There is lots of different things to color in this book.

Cute!!

I'm reviewing under my husband's account since I order every thing on his because he has Prime.
This book is so cute! I like it because it would work for kids or kids at heart! :) My 4 and 5 yr olds love this book so I have to fight them for a page. Lol
If you like Kawaii things, definitely try this!
