About the Author

Brad Scarface Jordan has released eleven solo albums and seven albums with gangsta rap pioneers the Geto Boys. He is a producer and record executive, the former president of Def Jam South, and Rap-A-Lot Records, which was one of the most successful independent rap labels of all time. He lives in Houston, Texas.

Benjamin Meadows-Ingram has served as the music editor of Billboard and as the executive editor of VIBE. Originally from Memphis, he is an accomplished writer and editor and has written extensively about southern rap.

I purchased and read this book in one sitting . I appreciate his honesty. This book was well put. I felt WHOLE STORY. I learned so much and I took away some sound advice. I now have so much respect for Face more than ever. He spoke very candidly about the trials and tribulations he experienced at RAP A LOT. No matter what, he still came out on top. THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ.

This is a very powerful memoir and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. The only issue I have is that it could have been longer. Scarface really draws the reader into his mind with his brutally honest imagery.

This book offers a comprehensive overview of the major conceptual models that are used to understand the patterns and dynamics that operate in families. About the Author

Stephen Anderson is a Professor in the Department of Human Development & Family Studies at the University of Connecticut.  He is Director of the Marriage and Family Therapy Program and the Center for Applied Research in Human Development.  He received his Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Kansas State University. His research interests include - Youth Development, Assessment of Family Functioning, Couple and Family Violence, Family Therapy Supervision and Training, and Program Evaluation.

 

Ronald Sabatelli is Professor & Department Head of the Department of Human Development & Family Studies at the University of Connecticut. He received his Ph.D. in Family Studies from the University of Connecticut.  His research interests include how family of origin experiences influence the structure and experience of parenthood and romantic relationships; youth development, and the assessment of relationship and family functioning. He is currently the editor of Family Relations, an interdisciplinary journal of applied family studies, published on behalf of the National Council on Family Relations.

Superb for those interested in family systems and theapy!

I first knew of Anderson and Sabatelli's works through the professional journals in family studies and family therapy. I used the instrument "Differentiation in the Family Systems Scale (DIFS)" developed by them in my master's thesis research. Their approach is mostly influenced by Murray Bowen's family system theory. In this text, they again use the Bowenian theory as a grounding framework, combined with structural family theories (i.e. Salvador Minuchin, David Olson's circumplex model..etc.). The authors did an excellent job of integrating existing family science literature. For example, in chapter II--family strategies, they propose six universal strategies families employ to meet developmental tasks during the family life cycle: developing identity, regulating boundary, maintaining resources, managing emotions, and coping with stress. Then, these strategies were used to illustrate family interaction patterns in different family developmental stages throughout the chapters in Part III. The last part disscusses four alternative family developmental pathways. I find the chapter on death, loss, and bereavement is especially insightful. Unfortunately, gay and lesbian relationships were not included here (nor in the "family diversity" chapter). That makes the book somewhat incomplete. However, I find the text is very suitable for introductory family courses, especially for those who prefer psychological approach rather than traditional sociological approach. This book is also recommended for family therapy students as the foundamental knowledge base. Though I left the graduate school few years ago and am a counselor now, I still find some concepts in the book very refreshing and useful for clinical conceptualization. I give this book a very high praise!

All graphics, no info

This books takes infographics in the wrong direction: heavy on graphics, light on info. The authors are impressive designers, but their infographic creations are text-heavy, overly-decorative affairs that do very little to make the info "tell a story".

Early in the book, the authors grant themselves a license to over-decorate by referencing some research from the University of Saskatchewan, proving that overly-decorative graphs are more compelling than ugly black and white graphs (duh!). But they abuse that privilege, pounding "info" into the dust while investing in chaotic, funky designs.

So, scratch the "info". But this might be a worthwhile book if the authors would at least share some of their "graphics" tricks. They are indeed gifted designers with a funky sense for the web 2.0 world. Alas, they share little about design, layout, color choices.

As for "storytelling", this is just a buzzword they slapped onto the title. Their text-heavy overly-designed infographics have a topic and pictures. But how is that a "story"? The authors never plumb this area.

In the end, this book delivers nothing that the title promises. I returned my copy.

Wonderfully crafted and compelling read

"Infographics: The Power of Visual Storytelling" is a wonderfully crafted and compelling read. Early on, the authors explain that their primary purpose is to provide an in-depth understanding of the value surrounding the use of infographics, and inform as to the proper approach and implementation of the medium; and they do exactly just that. With chapters covering such topics as determining what makes a good infographic, choosing the right vehicle for your message, and information design best practices, this book is chalk full of countless examples and descriptions of some of the many applications for infographics as a means of improving overall business communications in a manner that is both concise, and engaging, for your intended audience. A must read for anyone serious about exploring this powerful medium of data delivery further.

This one isn't written for the design practitioner (but plenty of other books do that). It is more geared towards a VP of Marketing/CMO crowd looking for ideas and new ways to share information.

About the Author
Dr. John Anderson, Jr. received his Ph.D. in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering in 1966 from the Ohio State University. Dr. Anderson served as professor of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Maryland where he became the Glenn L. Martin Distinguished Professor for Education in Aerospace Engineering. He is an Honorary Fellow of AIAA and a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society. Among his numerous accomplishments, he was awarded the AIAA Pendray Aerospace Literature Award ""for writing textbooks in aerospace engineering which have received worldwide acclaim."" In 1999 he retired from the University of Maryland and was appointed Professor Emeritus. He is currently the Curator for Aerodynamics at the National Air and Space Museum.

Exciting introduction

This is my favorite Anderson text, next to Modern Compressible Flow and Computational Fluid Dynamics. Both are 5 star texts.

There are a surprising amount of typos in the text. Just be careful. I found them because I parsed the text carefully during my outlines of the chapter material. You find about 1-2 typos per chapter.

Looking at it in front of me, it's a beast. I did not formally cover the first 445 pages of Hypersonics but I did cover the last half of the book while studying High-Temperature Gas Dynamics. The high-temp sections offer a very good roadmap for learning. All of the topics are brought together very well during this portion of the text.

The information on Hypersonics appeared exhaustive. If it is recommended for hypersonics, I would get it. It covers inviscid AND viscous hypersonic flow in parts 1 and 2. Part 3 is high-temp. This is an excellent INTRODUCTORY text for graduate level students. The author does recommend many texts that will allow the reader to delve further into the subject matter.

John D. DeHaan, PhD, FABC, CFI—IAAI, CFEI, FFSS, FSSDip

An internationally recognized forensic scientist, Dr. DeHaan is the senior author of Kirk’s Fire Investigation and co-author of Forensic Fire Scene Reconstruction, the two leading textbooks in the field of fire and arson investigation. He is also a former principal member of the NFPA 921 Technical Committee on Fire Investigations.

 

Dr. DeHaan has been a criminalist for more than 40 years and has gained considerable expertise in the analysis of fire and explosion evidence as well  shoe print, and instrumental analysis and crime scene reconstruction. He has been employed as a criminalist by the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, the U.S. Treasury Department, and the California Department of Justice.

His research into forensic fire scene reconstruction is based on first-hand fire experiments on fire behavior involving more than 500 observed full-scale structure, and 100 vehicle fires under controlled conditions, as well as laboratory-scale studies. Dr. DeHaan has testified as an expert witness in civil and criminal trials across the United States and overseas. He is currently the president of Fire-Ex Forensics Inc. and consults on civil and criminal fire and explosion cases across the United States and Canada and overseas.

 

Dr. DeHaan graduated from the University of Illinois—Chicago Circle in 1969 with a BS degree in Physics and a minor in Criminalistics. He was awarded a PhD in Pure and Applied Chemistry (Forensic Science) by Strathclyde University in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1995. Dr. DeHaan is a Fellow of the American Board of Criminalistics (Fire Debris), a Fellow of the Forensic Science Society (UK), and holds Diplomas in Fire Investigation from the Forensic Science Society and the Institution of Fire Engineers and a Certified Fire Investigator certification from the International Association of Arson Investigators. He is also a Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator from the National Association of Fire Investigators.

 

David J. Icove, PhD, PE, CFEI

An internationally recognized forensic fire engineering expert with more than 40 years of experience, Dr. Icove is co-author of Kirk’s Fire Investigation and Forensic Fire Scene Reconstruction, the two leading textbooks in the field of fire and arson investigation.  He is also co-author of Combating Arson-for-Profit, the leading textbook on the crime of economic arson. Since 1992 he has served as a principal member of the NFPA 921 Technical Committee on Fire Investigations. As a retired career federal law enforcement agent, Dr. Icove served as a criminal investigator on the federal, state, and local levels. He is a Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator (CFEI).

 

He retired in 2005 as an Inspector in the Criminal Investigations Division of the U.S. Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Police, Knoxville, Tennessee, where he was assigned for the last 2 years to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF). In addition to conducting major case investigations, Dr. Icove oversaw the development of advanced fire investigation training and technology programs in cooperation with various agencies, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA’s) U.S. Fire Administration.

 

Before transferring to the U.S. TVA Police in 1993, he served 9 years as a program manager in the elite Behavioral Science and Criminal Profiling Units at the FBI, Quantico, Virginia. At the FBI, he implemented and became the first supervisor of the Arson and Bombing Investigative Support (ABIS) Program, staffed by FBI and ATF criminal profilers. Prior to his work at the FBI, Dr. Icove served as a criminal investigator at arson bureaus of the Knoxville Police Department, the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office, and the Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office.

 

His expertise in forensic fire scene reconstruction is based on a blend of on-scene experience, conduction of fire tests and experiments, and participation in prison interviews of convicted arsonists and bombers. He has testified as an expert witness in civil and criminal trials, as well as before U.S. congressional committees seeking guidance on key arson investigation and legislative initiatives.

 

Dr. Icove holds BS and MS degrees in Electrical Engineering and a PhD in Engineering Science and Mechanics from the University of Tennessee. He also holds a BS degree in Fire Protection Engineering from the University of Maryland—College Park. He is presently an Adjunct Assistant Professor in Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville; serves on the faculty of the University of Maryland’s Professional Master of Engineering in Fire Protection; and is a Registered Professional Engineer in Arkansas, Louisiana, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.

Good For Any Investigator or Entry-Level

I have read this book first when it was a 3rd ed. I had decided that I needed an updated version and I have never been disappointed. It was exactly what I expected and it is as good as when I first read the 3rd edition. This edition is even better because it contains updates as the field of Fire Investigation is ever changing to a degree and it has great color illustrations that the previous edition that I had did not. Like the edition I have read before this one continues to be a well-balanced text providing both entry-level investigators as well as those well practiced in the field a great reference. It is written and organized great skill. It allows you to find a topic quickly. Or it allows the student easy learning objectives and highlights key points along the way. I would highly recommend this book for the beginner as well as someone already practicing that needs a great reference. This is a well-respected author and that is reflected throughout the text.

I fought buying another version of the same thing, but I did it and I am glad.
Its not hard to read, and if you get dragged into court by some lawyer that wants to Daubert you out, you can dazzle them with what you have learned from this book, because it's in there.

Great Condition, better than listed

I ordered this book and paid the extra money to get it shipped next day. It was still cheaper than driving 20 miles to the College Bookstore to buy it. It was listed as "Acceptable" for its condition and I would have listed it as "Like New." It had no highlighter marks, pencil marks or any damage I was able to find at all. I thought it was a brand new book. This was my first Amazon order ever for a textbook. Great Job.Thanks

About the Author
Ruth Fishel, M.Ed., is an author, national retreat and workshop leader and meditation teacher. Among the many books she has authored are; Time for Joy, The Journey Within, and Time for Thoughtfulness. Ruth has also developed SpiritLifters, a line of inspirational greeting cards, which draw on the messages in her books. Currently she is a director of Cape Cod's Spirithaven, Inc., which she co-founded in 1989.

Learn to meditate

On the surface, this book is about recovering from addictive substances. While it is very useful in that context, it is also a wonderful book that teaches you a simple yet powerful meditation practice. This book would be excellent for anyone wanting to learn how to meditate. It is even more powerful for anyone with issues around addictions.
