Explorer, a review.

I'm intrigued but somewhat disappointed. Just as the continuation of the saga was beginning to take shape it ended. The Genesis series that this novella springs from were 3 complete novels. This novella, while intriguing seemed rushed rather than nurtured. I'm definitely looking forward to more. 3 stars because I think it could have been so much more.

Like dessert after a tasty meal

At the end of the Exodus trilogy, I wished I could have had just a little more of the story. I wanted to know what happened next! This story is a continuation of the Exodus trilogy, and although it is short, it is just what I was hoping for. If you were thinking about reading the trilogy but haven't yet, I strongly encourage you to do so, and then read this story. It will be like having a nice dessert after a tasty meal. That being said, this story works well even if you haven't read the trilogy, with brief but useful back-story woven in. I am looking forward to finding out what will happen to these interesting characters on their strange, adopted home planet.

I thought this novella was what the doctor ordered - was wondering what was going to happen with Aurora colony and interaction with the other colonies. I imagine that the author has his reasons for having this novella so short - writing other books and developing other characters, and time frames - but I can see many more books in the future from the Exodus series. It left me with the munchies. I like the direction and hoping for additional character development in the Aurora Colony. Most definitely, read the Exodus Trilogy before Explorer... Cheers

About the Author
Professor Zhang conducts research on Rock Mechanics, Rock Engineering, Sustainable Geotechnics, Geoenvironmental Engineering and Earthquake Engineering. He received his Master’s Degree in Geotechnical Engineering from Tongji University, China and in Civil and Environmental Engineering from MIT, USA. His PhD was received in Geotechnical Engineering from MIT. He has published over 50 articles in international peer reviewed journals such as Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering, International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences. Currently Prof. Zhang teaches the following courses at graduate level at The University of Arizona:
• Geotechnical Engineering and Design
• Foundation Engineering
• Earth Structures in Geotechnical Engineering
• Ground Improvement
• Geoenvironmental Engineering

Professor Zhang is the Principal Investigator or Co-PI in more than 15 grants and contracts from National and State institutions and Private Companies. He has received awards such as ASCE ExCEEd Teaching Fellow, 2011; First Runner-Up, Young Professor Paper Competition, Deep Foundations Institute, 2008; Arthur D. About the Author
Brian Marick learned Ruby in 2001 because Dave Thomas and Andy Hunt, original authors of "Programming Ruby", wouldn't let him off a shuttle bus until he said he would. He's been programming in it ever since, and he's made a special effort to teach it to software testers. His previous book is "Everyday Scripting with Ruby", which began as a tutorial for those very testers. He's not a Ruby programmer by trade. He makes most of his money as a consultant in the Agile methodologies. (After getting off the shuttle bus, he was one of the authors of the "Manifesto for Agile Software Development.")

Excellent scripting and ruby introduction

Everyday Scripting in Ruby is an introduction book to Ruby for people who script a lot. I guess I'm not really the target audience as I wasn't new to Ruby and neither to scripting. Yet, I started reading this book out of curiosity and ended up finishing the whole book. It is definitively a book that I would recommend if you want to learn writing scripts in Ruby.

The book consists of 4 parts, each gradually increasing in difficulty. The first part is called "Basics" and, as it says, covers the very basics of Ruby starting with objects and message sending and also introducing the irb. The Basics part also covers string manipulation, arrays and conditional logic. The second part is called "Growing a Script" and expands on introducing the ruby language by introducing booleans, regular expressions and booleans. Also, to me the most interesting part of the book, Brian explains how he gradually builds up scripts.

The Third part is called "Working in a World Full of People" and covers how to grow a script to take error handling and different input into account. It introduces Hashes and Modules. After this part, most basic ruby knowledge is covered and, if the reader can put that in practice he ought to be a pretty ok scripter. There is a final part called "The Accomplished Scripter" in which the author explains the watchdog framework he wrote using that to explain how to build frameworks.

The book did more than I expected. When I curiously started reading it, I expected it to just explain Ruby (and didn't expected to finish the book). However, I found that following the author writing his scripts made the book, for me, worth reading. That is, following the thoughts of the author and how he gradually build up his scripts. It is a book that I will definitively recommend for people new to Ruby and who want to use it as a scripting language. I wouldn't recommend it for people already familiar to Ruby, unless you want to read about how Brian designs his scripts. Because of that, 4 stars. Good book!

best ruby intro book/tutorial so far

This is my first amazon review, but I have to give this book props. I just started to learn programming 6 months ago, and have now been through a lot of tutorials (why's poignant guide, chris pine's tutorial, the pickaxe book, and others). This book is at the top of my list. It has the best explanation of object oriented programming in ruby, and is an excellent book for beginners. Many of my friends are asking me how to learn programming, and I will tell them to begin with this.

The book is modeled after the work of C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and William Morris. Watch for the sequel, The Devil's Mouth, due in June 2001

About the Author
Thomas Williams' thirteen books include fiction, theology, drama, and three books on C.S. Lewis's Narnia. He has written one national bestseller and one Gold Medallion Award finalist, In Search of Certainty, co-authored with Josh McDowell. A career designer/illustrator and C.S. Lewis aficionado, Tom's painting of Lewis hangs in the Wade Collection of Lewis manuscripts and memorabilia at Wheaton College. Tom and his wife, Faye, have three married daughters and eight grandchildren.

Too many problems...

The plot of this story is really very interesting and it could have made a great book but for a few things. The first is that instead of being a Christian allegory or making points in either a subtle or realistic way, the author makes them by having the main characters repeat them over and over. Many conversations between characters basically consist of 2 people exchanging sermon points. The second is that he repeatedly-when describing the "most" beautiful women in the books makes various references to their ample bosoms. At one point he goes so far as to have the princess wish that she had been born "ugly, flat, and angular". He also makes numerous comments about people that are ugly or unattractive being able to still find someone who will love them or still being able to be happy. So...despite 1/2 the book being a sermon the author has still clearly not grasped the truth that every single one of us is a beautiful and wonderful creation of God. Lastly, there is a scene in which a promiscuous character plans to bathe where one of the main characters will see her in hopes that he will be overcome with desire, have sex with her, and then have to marry her. Instead, one of the bad guys sees her and rapes her. It is stated more than once that this is her fault for being naked in front of him. While what she did was obviously wrong it does not- EVER - make rape OK. I read this book in my constant search to find good books for my tweens to read, but no book that blames a woman for her own rape is ever going to make the cut.

It's not just a story, it's an experience!

Tom Williams has a marvelous way of telling a story. You will actually fall in love with the main characters--and right along with them--feel their hurts, fears, disappointments, as well as their ultimate joy and exhilaration. There are profound lessons woven into the story, but they emerge from the characters' wrestling with decisions and their actions rather than tedious, preachy dialogs and monologs. Williams addresses some knotty theological questions, such as how the free will of men and women fits into an unfailing providence revealed in prophecy. But not to the detriment of a beautiful love story.

This book is masterpiece. It comes in second to none, including the works of George MacDonald, J. R. R. Tolkein, and C. S. Lewis.

A quarter of the way through reading it I went back over it to start making notes because the advice was so good. An example of

I'll start by saying that ive only read 5 books on the subject previous to this because im fairly new to interior design Perhaps that colors my viewpoint somewhat but honestly I just devoured this and cant say ive done that with non fiction books before. Maybe to experienced interior designers some of the advice is redundant and not revolutionary but as someone who has dabbled in home renovation successfully but wants to take it to the next level- this book was well worth buying. He has a really enjoyable writing style where he comes across as far from pretentious and yet very experienced. Some of the advice he gave I had heard of but there was still a lot I picked up. A quarter of the way through reading it I went back over it to start making notes because the advice was so good. An example of a simple tip he gave was to go shopping with your phone...in other words take photos of all the elements you want to buy (furniture, decor, soft furnishings) and then put them on your mood board and play with it to ensure everything works well together before buying a thing. If something sells out before hand it wasn't meant to be. I know that sounds simple and obvious to me now but it completely changed the way I have approached things and as a result I dont get carried away buying decor that doesnt always fit and it ultimately saves money while my overall looks now appear more sophisticated. We may be at different stages of knowledge with interior design but I would think most people would enjoy this book and gain some new tips or perspective

A young Bridget?

There is the usual praise for the author's other books in the beginning of It's Okay, I'm.....and somewhere it says that Georgia, our heroine, is a youg Bridget Jones. And that is not all that wrong.
The book is about Georgia, aged 14 and her teenage trouble with parents, littlesister, boyfriends, school, looks etc.
The plot or non-plot of this book would have been utterly boring, if it wasn't for the very funny use of the English/British language. I am also sure every girl aged 12-99 can relate to some of Georgia's antics if not all of them.
I bought this book thinking it was about a young woman, not a teenage girl, but I nevertheless liked the book. I think all teenage girls will love it.

i think all the Georgia Nicolson books are great, for all those teenagers that really enjoyed Princess Diaries and The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants! (or who didnt, it doesnt matter)

************DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME!!!****************
This story (not a book) was a complete waste of time and space on my kindle. There isn't anything good about it. This is the last part of what looks to be three separate books. Thank Goodness, I didn't have to spend money. It was all over the place and if I'm not mistaken it kind of sounds like different sci-fi movies. Anyway, this was a boring book, not worth the twenty minutes of my time. I am trying to stay away from these types of books. I generally, prefer whole complete novels. However, I do try to give authors chances. This author was presented as J A Felding, but it wasn't or maybe it's a pen name, who knows, but IT SUCKED BAD!!!!!

Darien and Rose love story continues to amaze me. The couple is determined to create a family together and they will not deter although they constantly facing danger due to the fact that Darien is a vampire and a member of the paranormal elite group. Vampires are attacking werewolves and Darien. The vampires are using Darien's sister death to cause havoc. I love paranormal romance because they keep you on the edge of your seat. Throughout all the dangers, the couple managed to create a son together. I would recommend this book to anyone who believes that love conquers all. I cannot wait for the next installment in the series.

What a roller coaster ride. The opening to this follow up was nothing but fast paced and kept you in tune to each line. I felt like pacing with anticipation of what would happen next. I was drawn into the quest as I tried to solve the mystery that awaited. I thought of different scenarios and could not stop my mind and eyes from pushing forward. Wow, again. I would love to read more about this couple with their new addition. What an excellent read!!!

Entertaining, educational and well written - no illustrations

I had a series of these books as a kid that were so well illustrated - that's what I was hoping this was - I was disappointed - no illustrations - but otherwise my 11 year old daughter and I enjoyed finding out about some famous people in history - you can easily get through a book in a night with an older child - or spread it out over a week and it makes Ameilia Earhart a human that you can really imagine.

A nicely done collectable

First, I must acknowledge that I do not draw or even consider myself an artist of any medium.

Other than the ubiquitous tome "Disney Animation: The Illusion Of Life" and additionally, a few chapters on animation contained within some of the 200+ volumes I own, this is the first dedicated specifically to learning the basics prior to my moving on to inking cells.

I was initially attracted by the description of what I assumed was a child's book, which referred to it as a "covetable collector's Item". Also it was 128 pages in length.

I received my book(s) today and was very elated to find a book I actually wanted to try out. The various chapters are represented by classic Disney from the earliest characters through today. For me, initially, the best parts were the short history lessons contained within each decade. Then came the animation graphics and finally the quality of and research of each lesson. After just one day, and my trusty Moleskin notebook, the order has changed to drawing first, history second and art comes in last. Surprise...a book on drawing that actually has the ability of inspiring a non-artist to grab his graphite and get busy!

I remember way back in high school, I somehow envied the "time wasters" who dabbled in drawing comics on their "Peechies" while in history class. They always seemed so talented!

Of course I now realise that my career aspirations as an old-school, non computerised "Animation Inker", is a pipe dream. At least I still have dreams. I also crossed one small goal off my bucket list. Or perhaps I should say I will, after finishing my lessons a few more times.

The presentation is fun as a puffy cover holds it all together with nice quality paper and they even included a ribbon marker to avoid dog eared corners while tracking my speed. You know...you wouldn't do that to a "covetable collector's Item"and I have to agree.

Inexpensive and well worth having as an important volume on Disney art.

Love drawing Mickey & Friends

Hooray! I finally got this new drawing instructional book. Too bad I didn't get t meet Walt Disney in person; he would have liked to see me practice this. But this is a great Walter Foster drawing book. I have been going in order from the 20s to the 30s so far. I noticed that throughout the years, Mickey Mouse and his friends have changed gradually. That is the amazing part. Walt Disney's legacy shall live on!

Same one sold at Disney World! Great book and super fun!

I purchased this book after visiting and falling in love with the Animation Studio at Walt Disney World. (It was about $19.95 when you exit into the gift shop.) It was great to get home and just have the book shipped to me instead of buying it there, it getting messed up while at the park, and having to package it for the travel home. The book itself is extremely easy to follow and provides many characters for you to draw. A great value and provides many hours of entertainment.
