A good start.

Theres no doubt that you get your moneys worth with this item. Many aspiring artists are willing to pay any price to get that head start, so it makes sense that you can get a good, basic, foundation established for less than 20 dollars. I personally felt I got my moneys worth in the first section of the book. It goes over some exercises that will definitely come in handy such as shading, and building form. You can pretty much do your own thing from there, and it has alot of how to's on other peoples work that made it in.

However, it could go into a little more depth. The first things they have you draw (A chick and a dog) are thumbnail size, there arent any pointers/explanations about properly building a form with the shapes you make. You just have to play around until you can see for yourself, thats no big deal but dont be expecting a full package with this book. If you already have the basics down, dont bother with this book.

Best book on drawing so far

I have recently started to draw again after about a thirty year lay off. This book is the best of the 7 or 8 I have. It has a lot of example drawings on a wide range of subjects dogs, cats, wild animals, fruit, plants, really nice trees, landscapes, people, and horses The drawings are shone in graphite pencil but I adapt the shaded grayscale samples to colored pencil drawings. The example drawings are very realistic not at all cartoon or childish. This book has kept me interested and busy for about a month and I have not come close to doing all the example pictures. This book is well worth the price.

Very good choice

I bought this for my daughter. She enjoys drawing, and this book is full of easy to follow step-by-step instructions for many items that artists would include in drawings. See the search inside feature at book contents for examples of things taught. Also this book is more portable (paperback, not too thick) than some other drawing books my daughter owns. Good for traveling. Equally good for those who enjoy drawing and want to expand their library or those who dont particularly enjoy drawing, but want one book with instructions to enable better drawing for school projects, etc.

Highly recommend.

About the Author
Steve Huston was born and raised in Alaska. He studied at Pasadena's Art Center College of Design. Graduating with his BFA, Huston began illustrating. His client list eventually included such names as Caesar's Palace, MGM, Paramount Pictures and Universal Studios.After nearly a decade of doing commercial work, Huston decided a change was in order. He's developed his unique teaching method over 30 years, teaching drawing, painting and composition- first at his Alma Mater, then at the Disney, Warner Brother, Dreamworks, and most other major studios.Influences include among others Titian, Michelangelo, Rembrandt, the early American Tonalists, the homespun character of the WPA art projects, and the heroic and graphic inventions of the American Comic Book form.Since then, Steve has shown his fine art pieces around the world. He's the only artist in the history of the California Art Club to win their gold medal three times.His work has been featured in Art News, American Art Collector, Harper's Magazine, Southwest Art, American Artist, Western Art & Architecture, Playboy, and many others.

A Bit of a Let Down

What am I missing? I am a big fan of Steve Huston the artist and instructor. I have seen his videos, which are very thorough and detailed. I admire his skill. The book was a let down. It didn't seem to surpass other books on the market and in some ways, fell short of them.

There is less instruction than I hoped. Much of the text needs a re write for clarity as well as some additions for depth. The pictures don't clearly support the text, at least not easily. The authors fabulous sketches aren't even here in abundance, and while it isn't a show off book, if the instruction is lacking, which I believe it is, then at least give us more eye candy or material to copy.

This is much more like a fancy set of notes for those who have studied with Steve Huston or taken his classes.

Negative reviews don't make me popular but I have to call it as I see it. It pains me to say it, but I think there are better books out there.

So you can get some idea where I am coming from and determine if this review is has relevance to you, some books I really like are Mike Matessi's Drawing Force and The Weatherly Guide to Drawing Animals, Rankin's Fast Sketching Techniques, and Mellem's Sketching People.

The book we have all been waiting for

At long last a book that tells you HOW to do things - I have hundreds of art books, most of them are barely disguised promotions or the art of the author, others order you to: "do this!" but never tell you "how", and you end up starting every drawing hoping for the best and being regularly disappointed.
Steve Huston's book is a blessing for all artists, it explains, shows and analyses in simple but precise terms the how-to that no one else explains. After reading once (and a half) this book I have already had several "ahah! but of course!" epiphanic moments, and I am beginning to know what I'm doing when I begin a drawing - if I do it wrong, no matter, I start again, I know the steps to follow.
Huston also tells us about the meaning of art, the way to freedom in art and gives us tons of examples of all steps in the drawing.

A Concise but Thorough Look into the Mind of Steve Huston regarding Drawing

Great book. If you have the opportunity to learn from Mr. Huston via recorded lecture (or better yet, in person) you should sketch along with him and take notes, rather than watch him do all the work. Once you have taken your own notes and done your own work, this book is a great way to revisit his notes and ideas in his own words, and it's another chance for you to follow along and do additional work alongside his. The book is thorough but concise. The book doesn't cover much in the way of color or painting, but then again, it's a drawing book. If another book on painting is in the works the consider me already in line to buy it.

Enjoyable book

First for the quality. I purchased the Kindle version of this book. Was very happy to see that it's actually the first 3 books combined - if you're familiar with the series, you'll be happy to know you only need to make 2 Kindle purchases instead of 6-7.
Standard Amazon Kindle quality book - text is crisp clear - not a scanned copy. No DRM at publisher's/Author's request.

The book itself is fun - a present day manufacturer/inventer/socialist... transported into the past by unknown (to him) means. Creates a new modern civilization. Has (fairly non-explicit) sex with 14-16 year old girls (which is nonetheless embarrassing when you loan your book to someone). Saves Poland from invading Mongols. A more modern "Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court," except the Catholics are the good guys this time.

It's not a bad read, and for the price of $9.99 for 3 books, it's worth a try.

For the next three books, look for "Sir Conrad's Lady" for the Kindle.

Los primero capítulos creo que necesitan revisión, habla sobre errores y casos de estudio de la tarjeta de control del elevador...
Para esa parte, en particular no manejo eso. Pero lo continué leyendo y tocaron los temas sobre los VFDs y de ahi a las comunicaciones industriales no pare de leerlo.

Para mi ver es de los mejores libros de Variadores de Frecuencia en Español. Esperare la próxima edición, u algún otro libro de este gran autor.

Inspiring collection of personal triumphs

I love stories of people who've gone from nothing to something and this collection puts a smile on my face every time I read one. The stories really motivate you to stay positive and work hard to get what you want out of life. The names are familiar, but their stories weren't, at least not to me. I knew about Arnold Schwarzenegger's background, but the stories about others, like Jerry Seinfield and Ellen DeGeneres, were new to me. Seeing Seinfield now, I just can't imagine him choking on stage like he did with his first stand up attempt. I would have probably quit but he never gave up. That's the theme of all the stories really. Never give up.

It's so easy to see people on TV or in movies and think oh well they've got it easy, they're rich and successful. But when I read their stories I realize they started out the same as I did, sometimes a lot worse off even. It's such an inspiring collection of personal triumphs, really enjoyed reading it!

This book is full of inspiration gems!

Knowing the stories of great people from all walks of life is an effective way for one to learn different lessons in life. This is my main conclusion after reading this book. I cannot pinpoint what are the most important lessons I learned since it seemed that each story is unique from each other.

This book, as the subtitle states, is a collection of stories of different people. When this was offered to me by Jason, the author, I asked myself what are the possible lessons I can get from the people featured here. I had a bias towards famous business persons, statesmen; those people who are usually featured in biography books or who have their memoir. So when I read that there are people from entertainment industry, I was intrigued. I asked what could I get from them aside from seeing them show their skills in movies.

It turns that I learned a lot and was inspired by their stories. Now I will not look at the likes of Vin Diesel, Charlize Theron, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Ellen DeGeneres the same way I look at them in entertainment roles. Now I see them as people who have faced their problems with tenacity and relentless pursuit to attain their goals despite the many setbacks they encounter. All of these because of this book.

Moreover, this book, short as it may seemed based on the number of its pages, is full of inspiration. It is like a healthy salad full of nutrients in every bite you take.

I recommend that you read this book. It is short enough to finish but long enough to keep you inspired.

The cutting-edge science of why so many folks these days are in a distracted haze, its dangers, and what to do about it

Have you noticed how many people are looking at their smartphones while walking, crossing the street or even driving? Does it drive you up the wall that your friends keep checking their phones while you're trying to talk to them or share a meal? Our addiction to gadgets and gizmos has brought us to the brink of an attention crisis, which is not just harmful but dangerous. 80% of all car accidents and 16% of highway deaths result from distracted driving, and every year texting while driving kills thousands of folks before their time. In addition, hundreds of billions of dollars in productivity are lost annually to distraction, not to mention the loss in overall quality of life. Why do we all do this even though we know it's terrible for us? And is there a cure?

Goal interruption is the ultimate problem, and the culprits are distractions and interruptions (there's a difference!). According to Drs Gazzaley and Rosen, we are susceptible to them because we still have brains designed for foraging, always scoping the environment for novel information to enhance survival. Unfortunately, modern gizmos plug directly into this foraging circuit, making us go "Squirrel!" even when it's just a picture of one on a screen, and we don't really eat squirrels anymore anyway.

Gazzaley and Rosen -- a neuroscientist and psychologist, respectively -- make a strong case that distraction is indeed diminishing the quality of our lives in significant ways. They lay out the science of attention and information processing in a way that is thorough yet accessible to a general audience. What I particularly like about this book is that they themselves have done some of the pioneering research on distraction and attention, so you're getting it straight from the source. I gained a lot of insight into how goal interruption happens. For example:
-- Suppressing irrelevant information is not a passive process. It requires effort, and as you get older, you get worse at it, and are more distractable.
-- Your brain can only handle one cognitive task at a time, so multitasking is impossible. What you're really doing when you think you're multitasking is 'task switching', and the brain can only do that via network switching: activating a whole different set of circuits. This slows you down, big time.

So we've identified the problem -- now what? The last two chapters of the book propose some solutions: educational initiatives, meditation, exercise, brain games, and video games, some of which (like Beepseeker and NeuroRacer) are being developed in the Gazzaley Lab right now. This is cutting-edge stuff, folks, and potentially revolutionary.

There's so much more in the book that simply won't fit in a short review. For me, the information was especially important because I've been feeling a lot of my energy and productivity frittering away from distractions like email and social media. How much more could I get done if I managed my mind better? "The Distracted Mind" non-judgmentally frames the problem as the urgent crisis that it is, while proffering some straightforward solutions. Maybe you, too, would like to take back some of your time and attention, or have a loved one that really needs help in this department. If so, this book is the persuasive wallop you need to make the change towards a more goal-oriented, productive, healthy life.

Take back control of your attention and improve your life

This book is an excellent resource for anyone curious about the impact on technology on our brains and how it affects our daily lives. Gazzaley and Rosen provide the background research––both the neuroscience and psychology––behind what is driving our obsession with technology, the positive and (mostly) negative impacts it has on our ability to focus and perform our best work, and how to take back control of our attention for optimal achievement. Most of us don't realize when we are blindly reacting to our environment rather than making conscious choices about where to focus our attention. The Distracted Mind will help you recognize these moments and choose for yourself how to best spend your time.

Heavy on research, scant on strategies/applications

The book goes very in depth on the research into how the mind works in terms of attention, distraction, motivation, choices, etc; and how it is affected when technology is thrown into the mix. However, I was really expecting and hoping for more strategies for maintaining one's ability to focus in this highly connected, multitasking society. This third part of the book was meager and contained nothing that I was not already aware of. I had expected that these two authors would use their expertise to postulate novel applications based on their excellent summation of the important research on this subject, or offer opinions or theories to help people maintain their focus. They did not do that at all. Pretty disappointing on that end.
