I'm stuck on it!

This book was everything I expected - comprehensive, accessible and well organised.
The book has some deep chemistry in it without being opaque. I am an inorganic chemist by training though haven't worked in the field for 15 years and I had absolutely no problems with it. This book is not for the general reader but I would suggest that any technical person who is not necessarily a chemist could get through it.
Remember - this is a handbook. As such it is designed to be a reference when faced with a problem like "What's the best glue for a metal to nylon bond?" I use it for amateur researce into glues and wood bonds. In that role, it is invaluable to me.

Great companion for the professional bonder

As a professional in the adhesion industry, this book is a valuable desktop companion. I use it when I am asked a question that is far afield of my normal scope of business. It contains a broad base of information on how various materials can be used, what they can bond, and the strengths and properties one can expect. However, it lacks the depth to make it useful in anyone's field of expertise. That is often not a problem, and I would recommend it to any professional in the industry, as it will help with data and additional sources of information when they are trying to find answers that are outside the normal scope of their experience and daily tasks.
As an aside, I would recommend that anyone purchasing this volume keep a copy of MIL-HDBK-691B nearby, as it covers many of the same topics and can provide a quick second opinion in adhesive/bonding selection and methods.

The Essentials series continues, this time for WAIS-IV. Comprehensive, thoughtful, and based on good theory and research, the authors cover every aspect of WAIS-IV construction, administration, and interpretation. PLUS... there is a bonus this time.... a CD with software to do all the STEPS calculations for you! Wish we could get this for WISC-IV. Highly recommended for clinicians using the WAIS-IV.

WAIS-IV assessment book helpful, somewhat

I ordered this book hoping to get assistance in making sense of the large amount of data generated by administering and scoring the test, following my first administration. One attraction of the book was that it comes with a CD program that interprets the data, once you have calculated and entered the standard scores. I wrongly assumed that the program would do automatically what the test manual prescribes for hand-scoring. (The publisher's available scoring program is rather expensive for the number of tests I administer.)
I had some difficulty opening the program, getting error messages. I contacted Wiley IT support and they were helpful in solving the problem.
I had started writing my report before I received the book. When I ran the test scores through the program, for comparison, I soon realized that some of the interpretation methodology differed from that described in the WAIS-IV manual. For example, the criteria for determining if there are significant differences between subtests within an index, (which according to the book renders an index "not interpretable") are different. The method in the book has a higher numeric level required for significant differences.
That led to some confusion on my part on how to and whether to combine the two approaches or stick with one, which I finally resolved by determining which was more helpful for making recommendations for the client.
If you are comfortable with the various statistical underpinnings of test interpretation and want to do in-depth interpretation, you will probably like this book. It offers an alternative, 5-index approach called the Keith method, in addition to the WAIS 4-index approach. It also offers additional clinical clusters based on various theoretical models of intelligence.

About the Author

Paul B. Thompson has been a leading scholar in food ethics for over thirty years. He was present at the founding of three professional societies for food ethics and has served in an advisory capacity for the U.S. National Research Council, the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations, Genome Canada, and Wageningen University and Research Institute in the Netherlands , among others. He edited the Encyclopedia of Food and Agricultural Ethics (Springer) and writes a blog for Thornapple Community Supported Agriculture in Lansing MI.

A healthy challenge to ideas about conscientious consumption.

I'm heavily involved with our small town food co-op, and though I'm a retired city person living out my lifelong rural fantasy now, making friends with farmers, eating fresh farm food, happily free from commuting and shopping in supermarkets, I am very tuned in to all the arguments about eating local foods as a way to be kind to humans, animals, and the environment. This book educates me about the impossibility of untangling the interwoven factors that a person would want to understand in order to make ethical decisions. I like uncertainties that make strong opinions impossible, so even though I can't know if my food choices are ethically justified, I and hoards of others enjoy the fantasy of thinking we can save the world through better shopping,

I probably wouldn't pick a book about ethics off the shelf, but when it's about food my attention is alive, especially when it makes me into a skeptic about my own good intentions.

This is the best book available for people who are concerned with the ethics of food production and diet. Paul Thompson is a philosopher, an ethicist. But he is also steeped in the science of agriculture, the history and culture of agriculture, and the issues of the day, as he is a professor in one of the premier colleges of agriculture and natural resources in the world: Michigan State University. He will not let the reader off wth simple answers, though. His analyses of agri-ethics require one to consider first-order, second-order, and third-order consequences of of choices. Don't expect that all your presumptions and preferences will be easy to justify as you read. The book is well written, with a scholar's command of the subject. I have taught about agriculture and food as social scientist for 38 years. This book will affect the way I teach it from now on.

An Amazingly In-Depth Study Of Grumman's Spaceship

This book on the Apollo Lunar Module is an absolute necessity for any space history collection. This is a companion to Sullivan's earlier book of the same format on the Apollo CSM. If you have read his CSM book, you know how detailed it is, and amazingly this volume is even more detailed.

The book has a general history of Apollo and the LM program, with particular emphasis on the flight mode quandary, and the ultimate decision to use Lunar Orbital Rendezvous (LOR) for expediency, a move that in retrospect seems obvious, but dramatically altered the Apollo program.

This book is a mostly a compendium of incredibly detailed drawings of all components of the LM in extreme detail. The book is so detailed that there is no way a person can absorb all the information in one reading. Both the H and J series spacecraft are detailed, as is the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV, which in my opinion is Boeing's single best piece of engineering work ever.) This volume also comes with a CD of numerous images and files of great interest to an Apollo historian, including Adobe files of the Apollo Operations Handbook for the Lunar Module (volumes one and two), which basically comprise the flight manual for the LM. Think twice before you start to print these two documents, by the way, as they are about 1,800 pages long in combination.

My only complaint about this book is that the entire book (including the text) is printed in landscape format, which makes it much more difficult to read as text is fairly close to the spine. I also sometimes disliked the use of false-color drawings (used to illustrate different materials or complex mechanisms), but Sullivan did an admirable of using color photographs to show the same areas on various Lunar Modules. This book is an Apollo treasure trove, and space program enthusiasts will love it.

A terrific book about the lunar module.

Great detailed photos of the ( incredibly small ) interior.

Plus, the bonus CD has more than 1,000 pages of LM checklists

and detailed pilot manuals. After you read them, you

wiill be able to train to fly a LM !!!!! The Lunar Module is one of the greatest machines ever built. All of the younger NASA and aerospace workers should know the detailed history of Apollo ( they don't ).
The trajectories, timelines, methods and mission rules were all decided upon only after tremendous study, that is, they were decided for a reason.
This is a lesson the younger generation should heed.
