Writings by such well-known figures as M. Vitruvius Pollio, John Ruskin, and Rachel Carson are complemented by selections from diverse sources including early housekeeping books, eighteenth-century archivist manuals, and Victorian novels. Other seminal texts include John Evelyn’s seventeenth-century tract on air pollution in London and the founding manifesto of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings by William Morris. There is also a wide-ranging representation of recent scholarship, including writings from non-Western traditions such as India and Japan. Each reading is introduced by short prefatory remarks explaining the rationale for its selection and the principal matters covered. There is also a bibliography.

Intended especially for students, this volume will also be of interest to conservators, museum curators, collection managers, and others involved in caring for collections and objects.

It's a great guide for anyone who wants to preserve his negatives

Sorry for the delay, but it escaped my mind to put a review when it arrived. I am seriously glad to have the book, as a photographer that has a considerable amount of negatives, it is important to try and keep them in the best conditions for future archive images, etc. And this book tells you quite well all that is involved in picture conservation, a very interesting book indeed. Obviously, after reading it, you have to think of how to optimize your capacity to preserve the negatives in best conditions, but at least you have the knowllage to figure things out. :)

Homeward Highway by Lewis B. Hunter follows the travels of Lester Eugene Oliver. The day his wife leaves him for another man propels Lester into an emotional dive. Never an extrovert, his pride suffers a hit below the belt, and he quickly realizes his life no longer appeals to him. Change is demanded, but he feels inadequate to determine what he should do. The day comes when he takes a step totally alien to him. He leaves everything behind, buys a Harley, and takes off with no particular destination planned. He just wants out! He wants to get rid of the awful empty feeling of unworthiness.

His journey leads him into various situations, some precarious and all amidst very colorful characters. Each one shows him a life that he could easily take on and those to avoid. What he learns along the way is that his life still has value, and he needs to determine where his trust should be given. He becomes more comfortable the further he travels, and eventually succumbs to a need to be back, to reconnect with his daughters at least.

Initially reading this story, I felt it was a book that only a male would enjoy. There are some segments where morals slide. However, the journey is not only for Lester to travel because the reader comes to know him too. Perhaps, like me, you will find him very likable and his inevitable choice of new friends is very acceptable. Lots of Southern charm, along with characters that would force anyone to make rapid decisions to keep their self-respect and values intact. A good story with some mature scenes and language.

Well written. Could be called The Journey of Self Discovery. The author knows motorcycles and touring. The people Leo meets along the way are mostly friendly and helpful, just like most of the people you meet on an actual tour. They are also interesting if you take the time like Leo did to listen to them.
I really liked the way the author described many of the roads that Leo traveled. I've been on many of them and the descriptions were accurate enough to bring back memories. The plot wasn't fantastic but it was believable and was low key overall with just enough excitement thrown in to keep things moving. Its easy to get into this book and just enjoy the ride.

I started out a little skeptical about the book because I have never rode a motor bike on a long trip. It became more interesting as each time I read greater lengths. Soon I became the character " Leo " and I could not put it down until I had finished the book. It was a great read that helped me understand some troubling parts of my life.

I found this to be a very enjoyable and enlightening book. The characters are easy to relate to, and the main character Leo quickly becomes someone you identify with as he takes a long look at his past. I enjoyed the way the author makes some very reflective insights into who we are and how we became the people we are. Those realizations are perfectly balanced with humor and humility in the nature of the main character and the friends he made as he found himself on the journey. This turned out to be far more than a book about a motorcycle journey. It was a journey into the adventure of discovering yourself and how to allow yourself to relax and make the most of your relationships with family and friends.

About the Author
Anthony Minardi is a marine biologist and educator. He has studied and published on the subject for more than forty years, with a particular focus on northeast coast of the United States. Mr. Minardi is the former chair of the science department of East Hampton High School, New York. He has also been assistant professor of biology at Southampton College, Chapman College, and Syracuse University. As part of his doctoral research, Mr. Minardi performed field and laboratory studies at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, Massachusetts. Mr. Minardi was named Outstanding Biology Teacher (New York State) in 1986.

Piri Thomas (1928 - 2011) was a writer and poet whose memoir "Down These Mean Streets" became a best-seller.The book describes his struggle for survival as a Puerto Rican/Cuban born and raised in the barrios of New York. Thomas was influential in the Nuyorican Movement which included poets Pedro Pietri, Miguel Algarin, and Giannina Braschi, who wrote of life in New York City using a mix of English and Spanish. Thomas traveled around the U.S., Central America and Europe, giving lectures and conducting workshops in colleges and universities. He was the subject of the film "Every Child is Born a Poet: The Life and Work of Piri Thomas" by Jonathan Robinson.

First, let’s get the basketball credentials out of the way. Russell was the greatest team basketball player ever; his Boston Celtics won championships in 11 of his 13 years. Arnold Jacob “Red” Auerbach was the Celtics coach for the first 10 years of Russell’s career and later, as the general manager, assembled five more championship teams after Russell retired. Russell retraces the path of their lifelong friendship as it evolved from player-coach to professional equals to good friends. The relationship was always grounded in respect. Auerbach never tried to alter Russell’s then-revolutionary basketball style, nor did he ever interfere with or critique Russell’s involvement in the civil-rights movement. Auerbach’s Jewish heritage exposed him to some of the same prejudices Russell experienced in segregated Boston, though they never compared notes. Auerbach cultivated a public persona associated with words like gruff or curmudgeon that are partially accurate but woefully incomplete. He was extraordinarily intelligent, fearless, and sensitive to what would bring out the best in those around him. When Bill Russell joined the Boston Celtics in 1957 as the nation′s first prominent black basketball star, he was not expecting much from coach Red Auerbach. Despite two national college championships and an Olympic gold medal, Russell′s previous coaches-all whites-had barely spoken to him. Russell′s style was unorthodox, redefining the meaning of defense and offense, and many scouts dismissed him.

Yet Auerbach, the Jewish outsider in Irish Boston, immediately took to Russell, the African American from Louisiana and Oakland, and he was a coach like no other. Auerbach listened to his players, experimented freely, and knit together a team based only on results. Together they made sports history, winning 11 championships in 13 years. Along the way, Auerbach elevated Russell to player-coach, the first African-American coach in league history. Together, they battled prejudice both on and off the court, and created a team chemistry for the ages.

Even this glory is surpassed by another, little known aspect of their relationship: they became lifelong friends. As Russell explains, they were prepared for each other by their fathers, both strong men who loved their sons unconditionally. They both intuitively understood the dynamics of male friendship: there are many things left unsaid, but there is always understanding and respect. Over the many years since Russell retired from the Celtics and moved to the west coast, they saw each other rarely but spoke on the phone regularly. They were always there for each other. As Auerbach fell ill and declined, Russell was there, knowing how to reach out while respecting his former coach′s privacy. When Auerbach passed away in October, 2006, Russell refused to speak publicly about a relationship that was so deeply personal. Here, he offers a tribute greater than any speech.

This is a book not just for sports lovers, not just for fathers and sons, but for male friendships of all shapes and sizes.

About the Author

Five-time NBA MVP and twelve-time All-Star, Bill Russell was the centerpiece of the Celtics dynasty that won eleven NBA championships. As a major league coach, Russell won two additional championships—the first African-American to do so. He is considered the father of the modern pro game and one of the most significant Americans of the twentieth century in sports. His three previous books include the national bestseller Russell Rules.

Alan Steinberg is the author of numerous books, including the New York Times bestseller Behind the Mask and Black Profiles in Courage with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Unique Relationship

I came across this book, while going through a basketball website, and since Bill Russell is regarded as the greatest winner in team sports, and Red Auerbach is considered the greatest coach that's ever lived, I figured there is no better place to learn about them, than from Russell himself.

Russell shares stories of his childhood, and how it helps him in high school, college, and how it sets the foundation for his relationship with Red Auerbach. You could tell they had a sincere bond, and had a unique way of interacting with each other. They both realized what they had with each other, and were able to work toward one common goal: winning. It was one of the more encouraging examples of success, especially with what we see nowadays, with teams and some of the riff-raff that goes on, that has little-or-nothing to do with winning.

It also gives you a glimpse of a side of both of them that people were not accustomed to seeing, at least from what I've seen. We get to see Coach Red as someone who would play practical jokes, and even had some played on him as well. More than anything, Mr. Russell does a great job of exposing the man, and letting the reader know he was fiercely loyal, dedicated to success, and was someone whose mind was working 24/7, and all for the betterment of the team. More than anything else, it's the story of how two men came together, and became very good friends, while forming a bond that could never be compromised and broken.

I must state for the record that I am not a Boston Celtic fan... but the fact that I openly admired their "team-first" play... and even though I was saddened for decades as they always beat my Lakers in the finals... as a basketball player myself... I was true to the heart of the sport... when I openly said they were the better team. The Celtics of the late 50's and 60's were *THE-GREATEST-DYNASTY-IN-THE-HISTORY-OF-ALL-PROFESSIONAL-SPORTS!* Winning *EIGHT-STRAIGHT-NBA-CHAMPIONSHIPS*... and winning *ELEVEN-NBA-CHAMPIONSHIPS-IN-THIRTEEN-YEARS*! This is a mark that has never been matched... and with the lunacy of free agency... probably never will. At the core of these storied championships were two men. The architect... a small fiery Jew from Brooklyn... the coach and general manager... Red Auerbach... and the winningest player in professional sports history... and Celtic center... Bill Russell. This is not to say there weren't other great players on these Celtic teams... of course there were. The Hall of Fame's walls are lined with many of their plaques... in addition to numerous other Celtic legends as well. Just to name a few: "Da Cooz"... Heinsohn... the Jones boys... Sharman... Sanders... Havlicek... Howell... Loscutoff... and many others. But the most valuable of all these... was center Bill ("Russ") Russell. Russ's unmatched record as the ultimate winner included back-to-back NCAA Championships with USF and an Olympic Gold Medal in 1956 before joining the Celtics.

Most of these accolades are known by most Celtic fans and also by true sports fans. But what hasn't been known... until this book... because Russ never let anyone into his heart before... to share his intimate feelings... is how deep the reciprocal friendship... and yes the actual love was... between Russ and Red. The reason these feelings were never laid out in the open like this... is pretty obvious to Russ... and he'll hit you over the head with the reason innumerous times in this book. He and Red... like many of the other men of his time... didn't hug each other... or say I love you.

The Celtics became the first team in any professional sport to start an all black team. Asked about it they acted like they hadn't noticed... it was simply a case of putting the best team on the floor. When Red retired from coaching... he named Russ the new Celtic coach. Russell was the first black head coach or manager in professional sports history. Red and Russ never mentioned a thing. When the media asked Red about the significance of having the first "Negro" coach Red said: "LOOK, IT'S NO BIG DEAL. I JUST DID WHAT I THOUGHT WAS BEST FOR OUR TEAM."

The powerful impact of this book is that feelings and wisdom is being shared by a legendary sports figure who for decades and decades had kept any emotions... other than complaining about a foul call... locked in a personal vault that many thought even Russell didn't have the combination to. But when his *FRIEND* Red Auerbach died on October 28, 2006... the big man decided to share some of his personal beliefs and feelings.

There are some powerful and beautiful sentiments shared with the reader such as:

"IT IS FAR MORE IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND THAN TO BE UNDERSTOOD."

"FRIENDSHIP DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU GIVE TO EACH OTHER, NOT WHAT YOU GET FROM EACH OTHER."

"BUT WE BOTH UNDERSTOOD THAT IF I SUCCEEDED, IT ENHANCED HIM, AND IF HE SUCCEEDED, IT ENHANCED ME. ULTIMATELY, OUR REAL SUCCESS WAS OUR ABILITY-WITHOUT EVER HAVING TO EXPRESS IT OPENLY-TO COLLABORATE IN EVERY WAY WE COULD THINK OF, TO HELP THE *TEAM* SUCCEED."

Any Bill Russell fan will be utterly surprised at the side of Russell that he allows the world to see in this book. One quote that has already affected me is:

Mutual Respect

The secret to the unique friendship between Arnold "Red" Auerbach and Bill Russell has to be the mutual respect each had for the other. Red was the first coach Russell ever had who let him be himself. Rather than impose his own will on him Auerbach was smart enough and secure in his own position to allow Russell to "do his thing" on the basketball floor. Auerbach did admit to having two sets of rules, one for Russell and one for the remaining members of the team. Russell, to his credit, didn't take advantage of the situation. Both Auerbach and Russell were upfront with each other in their relationship and each respected and didn't question the others' beliefs in matters not related to basketball. An interesting anecdote is how Russell came to be drafted by the Celtics. Yes, it has been told in other books, but the Celtics had to do some maneuvering to get the chance to draft Bill Russell. I'm sure Russell would have been successful even if he didn't have Arnold "Red" Auerbach for a coach, but fortunately this odd-couple were a perfect match for one another. This book is a quick read, but it does contain lessons that will interest future coaches on any level in addition to anyone who is interested in reading about human relationships.

Fantastic book. Highly recommended!

I originally bought the second edition of this book from Daniel's website. After suffering for 10 years from infertility, pain, and a gigantic swelling, I came came across Daniel's book for varicocele natural treatment. This book changed my life around. It's fantastic. Before, I was hopeless. I wanted to end my life. I am serious about this. I actually attempted suicide once. No amount of therapy was helping and none of the treatments I discussed with 3 different doctors was helpful in my case. But after reading this book, I had some hope. And then noticed results within a few weeks and after a few months I was completely pain free! My marriage is hopeful again and my wife gave birth to a beautiful girl. I now have full hope for the future. My fertility tests are all positive now. I have no more pain and almost no swelling. I was very happy the latest edition came out it has so much more info. I have to say that Daniel really helped change my life around. He was extremely caring when I first contacted him with my issues, and very supportive throughout. He clarified and explained in detail any questions that I had. It helped me overcome my depression that was mostly caused by pain and infertility. Thank you Daniel, you saved my life. I recommend this book to anyone who's in a similar situation and looking to change their life.

A Holistic Approach that Has Helped Me Heal

After going through three years of life-altering pelvic floor and varicocele pain, I finally found this book. I was looking for any way I could possibly heal myself in a natural and holistic way. I found that traditional medicine, visiting three different urologists, taking antibiotics, other prescriptions, and just being told "you are too young to even be having this type of pain" didn't get me anywhere. I actually purchased an ebook version of this guide about nine months ago, and recently purchased the paperback as I like the non-digital reference.

The author's personal experience was the strongest evidence and catalyst for the development of a recovery program that actually works. I like how it is also well researched and backed by studies and medical evidence. I personally give more weight to an individual or a friend's life experience than I do to a particular medical study, but regardless, it is good to have both.

The guide goes through a common sense overview of what causes varicocele, exercises, lifestyle changes, and other things I did not even realize. I was not aware that I needed to cool the testicles, and be very aware of drainage. I emailed the author asking for guidance in general and he was very helpful. He not only gave me some additional advice, but took into account my feedback, and seems to truly care. This is the go-to book if you will do whatever it takes to heal.

Grade 4 varicocele pain to No more

I usually don't write reviews but wanted to pass on this best information to men with varicocele pain like mine. I was diagonized with Grade 4 varicocele and had tried every medicine ~ naturopathy, Ayurvedic, home remedies and allopathic all with just reliefs lasting for just few days at the max and ineffective there on.
The methods on this book gave me immediate relief and now I know how and what to do to avoid the pain. Plus I stopped the gym that caused stress and moved on to Jogging + yoga and 2 portions of fruits per day to see a lot of difference in my life.
Must buy and practice for immediate results.

As a Designer and Developer for some of the biggest, most-respected businesses and personalities in the world, I have had the distinct honor of working with some of the best photographers in the game. But when asked for my personal favorite photographer, I will refer you to Nick Fancher every time. He's smart and ridiculously talented and can bring beauty out of even the most mundane in the most unexpected ways. Judging from his impressive portfolio, you'd think he worked out of world-class studios with state-of-the-art equipment and unrealistically expensive retouchers. Nope! Try kiddie pools and puddles. Seriously, this book reveals the mind-boggling secrets behind Nick's masterpieces and shows you exactly how to use what you have around you to create beautiful, magazine-worthy shots on your own! Studio Anywhere is a selfless offering and a must-have to anyone who wants to create better pictures without having to shell out a penny more than the cost of this book. Well done, Nick!

Your Photography Library needs this book!

If you enjoy recounting the story of how Ansel Adams exposed "Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico" in a panic, unable to find his Weston light meter and forced to rely on his intuition and years of experience (and knowing the luminescence of the full moon - who doesn't?) then I suspect you will thoroughly enjoy this little masterpiece. I was actually going to start this paragraph with 'Would you take advice on photographic flash and lighting techniques from a guy who doesn't own a light meter?" but my daughter Natalie interjected "You can't start that way - people only read the first paragraph and move on."
I first met Nick Fancher at a Photography Workshop this Winter which was devoted to the concept outlined in this book, namely answering the question "If you don't have a 5000 square foot photography studio (or you have one but had to leave it at home), are you still able to capture and produce interesting, innovative and high-quality portrait photographs? You won't be past the first few pages of this well-written (and fun) book before you're hooked on the idea that, with a little bit of knowledge and some clever innovation, you can create really neat, clever stuff without thousands of dollars worth of not-so-portable equipment.
One of the previous reviewers implied that this was niche book for professionals struggling without a proper studio, but it's much more than that: Fancher assumes you know the nuts and bolts of regular camera manipulation, and instead of a boring lecture about "flattering 4:3 light ratios to bring out the Female Persona" he takes you on a Magical Mystery Tour of what you can do with light, and reflectors and gels, and what walls and surfaces are available as backgrounds, using very little equipment (I suspect he really does own a flash meter) and a whole lot of imagination and "thinking outside the box,"
For instance, did you know that gradually separating your subject from a pure white background changes the latter into a grey background and, moving further, into a BLACK backdrop? Did you know your flash has a tele feature that can be used to bring drama to a portrait? That an inexpensive flash grid will magnify this effect? That you can manufacture dramatic Vogue-type fashion shots with a simple sheet of pegboard?
I don't want to give the impression that this book is only a collection of Tips and Tricks like "Hints from Heloise" (although the book is full of lots of clever ideas) - Fancher knows light and knows how to make it work for him, and, more importantly, for you. He will teach you how to analyze someone else's work as to how the shoot was arranged, what lighting was used, and where, (he calls it deconstructing the photograph) and in so doing you quickly learn about the mechanics of the portrait and the art of producing aesthetically interesting work.
So this not a niche book - whether you're a serious photographer who's timid about delving into the scary world of portrait photography, a genuine amateur who simply wants to make great family portraits, or a blossoming professional who just wants novel ideas beyond the usual "Flash Photography in the Digital Age" plethora, you will probably rank this as one of the best little investments you've purchased yet.

Without a Studio

This is an unusual book targeted at a specific audience. That audience is photographers shooting portraits and products who do not have a formal studio in which to work. (To be accurate the author does discuss how to use a small cramped basement space as a studio.)

Fancher discusses using living rooms, backyards, offices, parks, streets and that cramped basement for photography. He shows how to get images with minimal equipment, like a single flash and a foam board reflector. From the examples he shows, this seems to work pretty well, and while his own images don't raise to the level of Karsh or Avedon, they are far better than the ordinary snapshot that a well-schooled photographer would take. There is also an epilogue that deals with some of the business aspects of being a studio photographer, even though that's not the main thrust of the book. Each example includes a lighting diagram. Moreover the author follows the progress of each image from setup to processing in Lightroom and occasionally Photoshop.

The author assumes you know how to use equipment and doesn't give any instruction on exposure, or focusing, or the technical aspects of using your flash. Moreover, it probably helps to be familiar with lighting techniques like main, fill and background lights. Similarly you won't get detailed instruction on using Lightroom, although the author shows which sliders he maneuvered, and to what purpose, to achieve his final results (although some of the screen captures are a little smaller than I would have liked for comfort). On the other hand, Fancher did give me a new respect for the Split Toning Panel in Lightroom, which I had always perceived as a bit gimmicky.

At first it seemed that the book would not tell me anything I hadn't seen in other tomes on photographic lighting. Then I got a series of small surprises. For example, I knew the advantages of shooting outside in open shade, but had never considered the degree of control I could get by posing a subject just beyond a garage door.

The author's style is almost too easy going and non-didactic and might lead a reader to at first believe the content is trivial. But the photographer without a studio may well pick up a few tricks that will enable him to make better portraits and product shots without a dedicated space.
