A goldmine of information

This book is a collection of twenty-one essays on Qajar Iran, each written by an expert in the field. The essays are all from ten pages to about twenty pages in length, and cover everything from biographies to critical examinations of events. As this was written for a scholarly reader, much of the writing is somewhat dry. However, that said, it does contain an absolute goldmine of information on the era, and is a valuable resource for anyone interested in nineteenth century Iran/Persia.

3.5 Stars. A couple finding their way back to each other

Brodie and Chantal have a history. They had feelings for each other 8 years ago when she was his best friend’s girlfriend. Then they all parted company and Chantal married a psychologically abusive man. She has divorced that man and is back at square one personally and professionally when chance brings her within Brodie’s sphere again.

Brodie is not how Chantal remembers him: happy go lucky, carefree, good time, womanising, no commitment guy. Instead, he is a serious, successful business man and taking responsibility for younger sisters. Chantal is a struggling dancer - ambitious, won’t accept hand-outs, fearful of controlling men. It takes her a long while to accept that her old perceptions of Brodie need some recalibrating.

They are a young, attractive couple in body and face, drinking Champaign out on his luxury yacht in gorgeous Sydney Harbour. Not the type of couple I usually relate to. So I didn't think I cared very much for them. I was wrong.

When the issues keeping them apart intensified, I worried that they would not work things out. It pained me to see them struggling. Their wake-up calls about their feelings pleased me and gripped me. Of course, they found a satisfying HEA.

This is my second novel by Stefanie London. I confess to enjoying “Only the Brave Try Ballet” a whole lot more (5 Stars in my opinion). However, this was a pleasant read and a very (very) sexy romance.

This is such a great story hot steamy and very sensual as two old friends re-kindle something that started eight years before but never got anywhere the setting is just beautiful a luxury yacht sailing up and down the coast between Sydney and Newcastle the perfect place for a friends with benefits fling but dancer Chantal and Yacht tycoon Brodie cannot deny the very heated sizzle that arks between them this is a beautiful story that will have you turning the pages and smiling as both Chantal and Brodie open up to each other and realize their love for each. Don't miss this one I loved it :)

Hewing close to the original film, Al Mansour tells the story of Wadjda, a rebellious and snarky 11-year-old Saudi Arabian girl. In a society that prizes modesty and piety in women, Wadjda clashes with authority: fiercely independent, she talks back to adults, listens to Western music, and yearns for a green bicycle she sees in a toy store. When her wayward habits land her in trouble yet again, she decides to go in a new direction by taking part in her school's Koran competition—in order to obtain the prize money and purchase the coveted bike. Wadjda is a well-executed character: despite her feisty nature, she's vulnerable and flawed, and her story will resonate with boys and girls alike. However, whereas in Wadjda, striking visual imagery conveyed the girl's desire for freedom, here, Al Mansour relies on often-clunky prose to describe every action, thought, or emotion. The author often pauses to explain the cultural context of various elements of Saudi culture (the significance of the veil, the concept of a second wife), which provides helpful background for readers unfamiliar with the region but feels purposeful and overwritten compared with the far more artful film. About the Author
Haifaa Al Mansour is a Saudi Arabian film director and screenwriter, and the winner of an EDA Female Focus Award. Her first feature-length film, “Wadjda,” won the Best International Feature Audience Award at the Los Angeles Film Festival, among other awards, and is the basis of this middle grade novel. Her next film, “A Storm in the Stars” starring Elle Fanning, is set to release in 2016. The Green Bicycle is her debut novel.

Insightful middle grade fiction

Set in modern day Saudi Arabia, this middle grade fiction book tells the story of Wadjda, a spunky eleven year old girl who is challenging what is expected of her. As I was reading, the scenes sprung to life, as if in a movie. I thought it would be fabulous as a movie and was excited to read in the "About the Author" section at the end, that this is the author's debut novel and was based on her award winning feature film "Wadjda".

This would be a fantastic book for readers of any age to gain insight into everyday life in Saudi Arabia. The writing is simple enough for middle grade readers yet still engaging for older readers.

A beautiful #ownvoices middle grade novel about a Saudi girl's determination to buy her own bicycle. I appreciated how Al Mansour gets middle grade relationships just right: Wadjda has a good friend in Abdullah--most of the time. She loves and admires her mother--but she's frustrated by her, too. And she doesn't care about fitting in at school--except when she wants the rebel girls to notice her. A powerful story, simply told.

A complete GED prep book that will help you succeed

The Steck-Vaughn complete GED preparation is a complete 5 topic study guide for passing the GED.

You start out using this book by taking a self timed practice test for each subject. (You can do all 5 at once, or 1 at a time.)

You then "grade" your practice test with the answer sheet provided at the back of the book.

When you are done "grading" your practice test there is an analysis sheet for each subject that shows you what lessons you need to study based on your correct/incorrect answers.

At the end of each lesson, there are practice tests based on the specific lesson learned.

After you have reviewed all lessons in all 5 subjects you need to, there is a final GED practice test in the back of the book.

One of the great things about this book is they give explanations for all the correct answers and why one answer is more correct than another.

If you don't have "basic" reading and writing skills, you will struggle trying to use this book. I think anyone with a 6th grade reading level should be fine.

As for the GED itself:
If you can read, write & comprehend - you will pass.

Social Studies and Science are just reading comprehension. All the information you need to answer all of the questions in these subjects are in the tests. You are given paragraphs to read, you then extract the information to the questions they are asking from the paragraphs you read.

Language Arts: Reading & Writing is about sentence structure, punctuation, mechanics & organization. As long as you use complete sentences and have clear ideas on your writing essay, you will pass. (Spelling does not matter as much as you would think on the writing portion of the test.)

Mathematics is the hardest subject for me, I fear math because I never learned it but fret not. You are given a "cheat sheet" when you take the math portion of the GED, this "cheat sheet" consists of mathematical formulas -- that's right -- you don't need to memorize the mathematical formulas, you just need to know how to use the formula to solve the problem. As I stated before, if you can read and comprehend you won't have a problem using this book to learn how to solve the problems using a specific formula. Oh did I mention you can use a calculator on the first part of the math test? Yes, sorry I forgot to mention that there are two parts to the math test. The first part of the GED math test is multiple choice and you can use a calculator, multiple choice questions make up 80% of the test, while 20% are open questions.

P.S. The GED is going to go through a complete overhaul beginning in 2014. Rumor has it there are going to be two GED tests. The first GED test for those who want a GED for employment purposes which will be similar to the current GED. The second GED test is for those who want continuing education, this test will be different as it will be more comprehensive and incorporate community college admission placement tests to better the education of GED entrance to the college level.

great teaching and self study tool

Complete Ged Preparation
I have been using this text to tutor adults in free GED classes for over a year. I like the format, clear and concise explainations,and the neat way study and skill tips are introduced in the lessons and at the end of tests. So far no one who has passed the practice tests in this book have failed to receive their GED certificate. I've looked at several other books and I am convinced the Steck-Vaughn products are the best on the market.

Almost A Tragedy: Richard III by Shakespeare
We saw a RADA performance of Richard III last summer on the Queen Mary 2 sailing across the North Atlantic to Southampton. I was struck by how tragic the play is even if it is supposed to be one of the histories. It reminds me of Macbeth. Richard aspires to be king the way Macbeth does. He commits crimes and must pay the price. In the end he dies defending his kingdom, again like Macbeth. Macbeth must fight the woods that come to Dunsinane. Richard cries out, "A horse! A horse! My kingdom for a horse!" while carrying on a battle against Richmond.In the RADA production's staging we saw underlined the ever-growing dark quality of the drama: flowers were laid on the stage by the gravestone of the newest victim. Richard's wife, Anne, grieves for her sins in marrying Richard and being seduced by him even as Lady Macbeth goes mad. The ghosts of the slain rise up against Richard in his sleep before his end while Macbeth is always grappling with witches and the supernaturalMacbeth. Of course the only reason Richard III doesn't number among the Shakespearian tragedies is because of Tudor politics. Richard was on the wrong side in the Wars of the Roses. He was the enemy of Queen Elizabeth's family. Shakespeare was forced to render the character of Richard in two dimensions instead of three.

Richard III (folger library edition)

I chose this Folger edition of the play because I have used these editions ever since I was a drama student in high school. I always like the way the footnotes and definitions of obscure words are interspersed with each page of text. These are among the most readable editions because one can quickly find the footnotes while reading, without interrupting the reading to flip to another page. Footnotes tend to be very small in print in some other editions, as well. The type set or font here is of a size that makes for ease in reading.
Of course, one should read many of the fine editions of other paperback and hardbound publications of Shakespeare to get to know the plays in depth. But the Folger PB copies are well-priced, and a very good choice for a first reading of any play.

Scientists discover bones – Playwrights discover souls

They can find bones but not the spirit. That was my thought when reading today’s newspaper and encountering an article describing the controversy over where the found remains of King Richard III should be interred. Yes, scientific analysis indicated his body was probably deformed due to scoliosis. However, only the master of the English language could discover Richard’s lament that ‘dogs bark at me as I halt by them’. Thus the motive for Richard’s villainous nature is established in Shakespeare’s play Richard III. Means and opportunity come easy to the royal knave whose evil mantra removes the handcuffs of restraint with the pithy observation that ‘Conscience is but a word that cowards use’. The picture is painted, the colors are words and Shakespeare is the artist.

I thoroughly enjoyed re-reading the play Richard III on my Kindle e-book device. The instant access to e-dictionaries made reading Shakespeare easier compared to reading my print version where the thought process is more readily interrupted by the length of time required to look up the definition of a word. English words are the linchpins of Shakespeare’s artistry so understanding their meanings are essential to the overall enjoyment of his works.

Since Richard III is historical fiction one must be reasonable in making historical judgments. I consider my following judgment of King Richard III a fair conclusion. Whereas Johnson was lucky to have his Boswell, King Richard III was unlucky to have his Shakespeare. For the rest of us, we were very lucky.

About the Author
Gordon Ramsay's radical career change at 17 years old led him to London and to huge success as chef, restaurant-empire-builder and TV star. We use it all the time for weekend cooking

I purchased this book in the UK, but would have loved to have the US measurements instead. My husband and I have made several nice dinners and lunches from this cookbook. Yeah, I can see where the pub food in this book may sound a bit 'posh', but the British pubs in my neighborhood in London are trying to serve this type of pub food. Some recipes you definitely wouldn't find in a local pub - that I will admit, but they are still delicious. Everything we've tried from this book has turned out fantastic, especially the honey lemon chicken recipe.

This book is a definite keeper for us and when we return to the States, will have this on hand to try and recreate the Sunday roasts and the other pub food presented in this book.

My recommendations for anyone trying out the recipes in this book are: read the instructions more than once, make sure you understand the steps, and have all your ingredients prepped and ready to go before you start.

I loved this book-since I am from England it was perfect for me. I could see where there may be some confusion for others over some of the ingredients but once you google them the U.S. comparison comes right up, same applies with the measurements. I would recommend it-great change to the usual dinner at home- Easy/quick cooking great results-suprise your friends!!!

Experience based

This book is not trying to sell you a $13k tool chest or a $20 4-pack of soap stone that will somehow make it all happen. It's been put together by the kind of guy who get's dressed up in his best pair of jeans and t-shirt to pose next to the incredible thing he just built. Written in a way that anyone could design their own shop even if all they have is a bucket of loose 1970's no-name sockets, some scrap wood, a 1980's stripped Honda, a pile of half-rusted wrenches, and a garage like those you rent in an apartment complex. I am a pro mechanic, welder, and fabricator and my home shop is a compilation of not so pretty stuff that works great. Half the time I walk through the door of my shop and wonder how anything comes out alive! This book is designed so anyone, regardless of budget, can dream up a shop and not worry about going broke in the process. I enjoy books like this because they remind me that skill and vision trump high-dollar tools and a glistening shop that looks like the only thing that's even been run in it was a mop.

An In-depth and colorful look at workshop setup

I greatly enjoyed this in-depth look at the motorcycle workshop. Since I am setting up my own shop, I constantly pictured how the concepts put forth by the author could be applied to my work area. The author is a wealth of information, and is very good at providing some alternate methods when applicable to suit a person's personal taste. There is much more to setting up an efficient workshop than one would think, and this is obvious after the first page or two. How do you set up an efficient and effective motorcycle workshop? The author pretty much slam-dunks that question, with lots of real-life examples, some common pitfalls, and a dry but very funny sense of humor. If you really, really want to know about setting up a shop, look no further. Another excellent book in a high quality series of books.
