About the Author

Jack Saul, PhD, is assistant professor of clinical population and family health at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health and director of the International Trauma Studies Program. As a psychologist he has created a number of programs for populations in New York City that have endured war, torture, and political violence, including the Bellevue/NYU Program for Survivors of Torture, REFUGE (Refugee Resource Center), Theater Arts Against Political Violence, the Post-9/11 Downtown Community Resource Center, and African Refuge. He consults with organizations on staff welfare in response to trauma-related work and has a private practice in Manhattan.

This book is fantastic. It presents plenty of meaty material to chew on, but presents it in ultra-refined prose that melts in your mouth. Contrary to typical dry academic texts, Collective Trauma uses personal narrative to illustrate its points. Complex yet clear, intense but often funny, this book challenged the way that I understand the day-to-day lives of sufferers and healers (which, as it turns out, can be one in the same). It is an absolute must-read for anyone interested in trauma, global mental health, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, or medical anthropology; but it should be read by everyone.

In a number of inter-related essays on changing generic forms, styles, methods, and standards, the collection demonstrates that the aesthetic developments associated with British literary 'Romanticism' not only intersected in mutually dependent ways with concurrent experiments and innovations in historical writing, but that these intersections forced an epistemological crisis-a deeply felt tension about the role of feeling and imagination in historical writing-that is still resonating in historiographical debates today. In exploring this theme, the volume also seeks to consider wider questions about the philosophy of history and literature, including questions of truth, evidence, professionalization, disciplinary strategies, and methodology. At its heart is the idea that literary texts and other artistic representations of history can have historical value, and should therefore be taken seriously by practitioners of history in all its forms.

About the Author

Dr Porscha Fermanis is a Lecturer in Eighteenth-Century and Romantic Literature at University College Dublin. Her research interests include the relationship between Enlightenment and Romanticism; Romantic-era historiography and historical fiction; and Romantic poetry and poetics. She has published John Keats and the Ideas of the Enlightenment (Edinburgh University Press, 2009), and is currently working on A Concise History of Romanticism (with Carmen Casaliggi, forthcoming 2015) and a monograph entitled Romantic Pasts: Narrative History in Britain and Ireland, 1770-1850.

Dr John Regan is a Research Fellow at Clare Hall, University of Cambridge. His current research interests centre on the inter-relatedness of poetry, aesthetics, and historiography in the long eighteenth-century. Dr Regan has published on Scott's prosody, philosophical history and late Enlightenment antiquarianism, and the relations between versification and historiography in Byron.

Good collection all in one place

I'm still reading this, so I'll update if the later chapters are either terrible or brilliant.
There is quite a serious typo throughout the book (kindle version, downloaded around early October 2013): "1-32".
When followed by the word "stars" I am assuming it should read "1-5". But in at least one other place I think "1-3" was meant.

Lack of technicality

This book is a little disappointing, most due to the non-technical writing style. Other books in this series appear to be more mathematical but this one is mostly without math. It is difficult to understand the technical details without disclosing the math, but it may be good for those who prefer non-math reading.

Great and indispensable book; needs better kindle editing

I agree with all the positive comments from other reviewers. This book explains the "whys" in ways that are logical, methodical, culinarily and scientifically relevant, such that the answers simply make sense. (e.g., explaining the difference between brown and white meat physiologically first, which makes it easy to understand why cooking them optimally requires different approach / temperature / duration, etc).

However, I'm disappointed by the kindle edition:

- It has no navigable Table of Content. Yes, there's a linking ToC at the beginning of the book, but you can't access individual chapters by going through Kindle's "Go To" menu.

- The book cross-references itself by page number, which is useless in the kindle edition. I wish the references were hyperlinked to the proper locations. Alternatively, Amazon can implement the new page number feature.

- The editing for kindle needs some fine tuning. The kindle edition embeds page number directly in the text, but not always sensibly:

"... the amino-acid content and there192 fish and shellfish fore [sic] taste intensity of fish varies according to the waters they're caught in."

- The placement / flows of sidebars don't always make sense on kindle. Sometimes you'll be in a new section and then encounter a block of text that seems to referring to the content in previous or next section. I suppose this is a limitation of kindle's small screen.

As a scientist myself, and as someone else enjoys cooking, this book has a special place in my heart. It has an insightful dabbling of history, science, and the culinary arts that make reading this a true please. Make no mistake, this is not a cookbook, but is more like a textbook that might be used in a class titled "Intro to Cooking." It is a history and scientific approach to cooking. There is chemistry, biology, and physics in here, sprinkled with a dash of history and a pinch of fun. If you go into this expecting a traditional cookbook you will be disappointed, but if you understand that you're buying a textbook here, you'll really enjoy it.

The Best!

I purchased this book for a course I took last semester. It is incredibly interesting. It's packed with information, but it never delivers it in a dull way. I find myself learning new things all the time as I peek into this book, and it has improved my confidence in the kitchen, as I have a better understanding of "WHY" things do what they do, or foods react to certain things, or change at certain temperatures, etc.
Great book that I return to again and again. The layout is excellent, and well organized. The index is stellar. This isn't the first effort or edition, and thus it is honed to precision, and delivers facts in an engaging way.

Another beautiful novel by Asensi

Matilde Asensi is one of the queens of the historical novel - the problem is, Everything Under the Sky is only the 2nd book of all her books to be published in English - The first book, The Last Cato, is one of my all time favorite books - it dealt with quests in and around the Mediterranean - great read if you haven't read it already -
Everything Under the Sky is as great a book as Cato, but it is not the rollercoaster action of Cato, rather immerses you in the Chinese culture and legends, and in its own way sends you on another equally dazzling quest.
Elvira De Poulain, a Spanish painter living in Paris circa 1920 is travelling to Shanghai with her prudish niece Fernanda. Elvira has been notified her husband is dead. She does not know his death wasn't more than an accident.
After a harrowing journey, Elvira finds her husband incurred a crushing amount of debt. Selling everything she owned will not cover a minute part of the debt.
At a fete an Irishman approaches her that the lives of her and her niece's are in danger - that her husband was murdered because he had in his possession an artifact so precious it could clarify history and make the owner filthy rich to boot!
After finding Tichborne's story is correct, Elvira meets an antiquarian, Mr. Jiang, they embark on a journey to find the lost mausoleum of the First Emperor of China and the riches it holds!
The care Asensi writes with to paint a picture as eloquently as a Chinese calligraphy is amazing - the details of the trip through China to find the mausoleum, the description of the tomb itself, it so beautifully presented, you will want to stop and take in the intricasy and ease it was presented to you.
It is as wonderful as The Last Cato, but in its way, it has adopted the quiet dignity of the Chinese culture and shown an exciting quest in those eyes.

Indiana Jones meets the (Chinese) Maltese Falcon

I meant what I said in the title; "Everything Under the Sun," reads like an Indiana Jones adventure, except it has the mistiness, darkness and speed of "The Maltese Falcon." You might even include a little "Star Wars," since a good part of the book is about people finding their way in a new frontier, in hopes of bettering life for others.

Elvira is a young Spanish painter who finds herself in deep trouble in the Shanghai of the 1920s, due to her husband's weakness for drugs, women and other amusements. With her teenage niece, her servant, a very learned Chinese antiquarian and an Irish journalist, she sets out to unify the pieces of a cultural treasure which will earn her enough money to pay off her husband's debts and return to Paris.

The reader learns a great deal about Chinese culture, literature, history and ways of thinking as Elvira and her partners are attacked by the Green Gang, learn more about their treasure in a Chinese monastery, exist on rice balls and hot tea as they journey closer to their treasure and suffer all kinds of indignities in the process.

A little less description would have been fine but I enjoyed "Everything Under The Sky" and would definitely read another by the author.

Fun and Interesting Read

I Read The Last Cato quite some time ago, and having thoroughly enjoyed it, was thrilled to find that another of Asensi's books had been translated into English. Without repeating the general story line, I found reading this book to be like watching Romancing the Stone or Indiana Jones. It would make a great movie in that genre, or possibly a video game with lot's of puzzles and riddles to solve. It is easy to read, touches on some of the concepts of Taoism and gives you a sense of what China was like back in the 1920's. There are also references to China's long and fascinating history mixed in with the action. Just enough information to get your curiosity up and perhaps propel you to delve deeper into China's history, culture and philosophies on your own.

With few chapters or breaks and a very fast pace, you'll find yourself searching for a place to stop so you can grab something to eat. This isn't easy as each section segues into another adventure almost immediately. A very enjoyable and fun read!
